Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.
